UW-Rock County Foundation Alumni Awareness Award
Janesville Doris Ellison of Janesville was selected as the recipient of the August 2009 Alumni Awareness Award presented by the UW-Rock County Foundation.
Ellison, a clinical instructor of nursing at Edgewood College in Madison for the past four years, first became a student at UW-Rock County in 1992 and continued to take courses toward a degree until 1998. She transferred to UW-Madison to complete her coursework and received a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing in 2001. She then went on to obtain a Master of Science degree in community health nursing and as a nurse educator from UW-Madison in 2003.
Ellison enjoyed the location of UW-Rock County because it allowed her to obtain an education close to home. At the time, I was a stay-at-home mom; my children were in elementary school, said Ellison. I needed a flexible schedule and UW-Rock County provided that.
While on campus, Ellison experienced great academic success, which she attributes in part to UW-Rock County instructors, including Kim Kostka, professor of chemistry, and George Jones, associate professor of economics. My instructors prepared me very well for the transition to UW-Madison. I believed in myself, but they also believed in me and that made a big difference, said Ellison.
Ellisons interest lies in public health and she continues to utilize facilities here in Rock County to educate her students.
The Alumni Awareness Award was created to honor UW-Rock County alumni or former students who are recognized for their expertise and good works. These notable people must have attended UW-Rock County for at least one year, completed a higher education degree and distinguished themselves through achievements and service or contributions to Rock County, where they live and/or work.
