UW-Rock County Announces Kaplan Award Winners for 2008-09
UW-Rock County Announces Kaplan Award Winners for 2008-09
Janesville–UW-Rock County instructors Brian Duckwitz, Pete Mory and John Pruitt are recipients of 2008-2009 Arthur M. Kaplan Awards.
The Arthur M. Kaplan Award was established to recognize outstanding contributions made to education by UW Colleges faculty and academic staff. UW Colleges provides a financial award of $250 to awardees, which is matched by the UW-Rock County Foundation. Awardees, who are nominated by their peers, may use the funds for professional development, supplies or equipment.
Brian Duckwitz, lecturer of English, and Pete Mory, associate professor emeritus of physical education, were recognized for developing a unique learning opportunity for UW-Rock County students that combines a beginning fencing course with an English literature course entitled “Is the Pen Mightier Than the Sword?” An interdisciplinary course called “Conversations in Steel” then links those classes through discussion of the themes and knowledge learned in them.
John Pruitt, UW-Rock County assistant professor of English, also received a Kaplan award. Pruitt was recognized for carrying teaching beyond the classroom and into public spaces on the campus through such activities as public readings during Banned Books Week and the African-American Read-In.
