UW-Rock County Foundation Presents Alumni Awareness Award

Janesville – Sherry Machones was selected as the recipient of the February 2009 Alumni Awareness Award presented by the UW-Rock County Foundation.

Machones, Edgerton Public Library director since September 2008, first became a student at UW-Rock County in 2000. She completed her associate degree in spring 2003 and transferred to UW-Madison where she received a bachelor’s degree in theater and drama in December 2005. She will graduate from UW-Milwaukee in May with a master’s degree in library and information science.

A first-generation college graduate, Machones was focused on her career goals. “I always knew I wanted to be a library director,” says Machones. “Since the age of 15, I’ve been employed at various libraries within Rock County; the atmosphere and work are enjoyable to me.”

While at UW-Rock County, Machones was enrolled in the TRIO program, which she credits for her academic success. “The tutors helped me with the courses I struggled in and taught me that I could do anything if I opened my mind to it,” says Machones. She also recognizes the UW-Rock County faculty’s positive reinforcement and encouragement with helping her to realize her goals even when faced with obstacles.

During the years Machones attended UW-Rock County, she involved herself in theater productions and was instrumental in the formation of The Alliance, a student club for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and straight people that is still active today. “Initially I chose UW-Rock County for the price and location, but, looking back, I not only saved time and money but obtained lifelong friends and knowledge,” says Machones.

The Alumni Awareness Award, first presented in September 2008, was created to honor UW-Rock County alumni or former students who are recognized for their expertise and good works. These notable people must have attended UW-Rock County for at least one year, completed a higher education degree and distinguished themselves through achievements and service or contributions to Rock County, where they live and work.

To nominate someone for an Alumni Awareness Award, contact the UW-Rock County Foundation at (608) 758-6628.
