Message:
I’m fascinated by storytelling, from cave paintings to novels, from brain-bending art films to old episodes of Three’s Company, and from dinner-table conversations to the papers my students write for class.

I passed my field exams last August, and I’m writing a dissertation that applies narrative and genre theory to speculative fiction from the mid-twentieth century. Also, I’m an avid writer of fiction and an associate editor for Narrative Magazine.

It’s my opinion that effective writing is not a magic power that some are born with, but a skill that, through much pain and practice, anybody can learn. In my classes, we learn how to write and read effectively by writing, reading, and talking about writing (though not always in that order).
